C22 1-deoxyceramide (m18:1(14Z)/22:0) is a long-chain atypical ceramide containing a 1-deoxysphingosine (m18:1(14Z)) backbone with a cis double bond at the 14-15 position rather than a trans double bond at the 4-5 position. 1-Deoxysphingolipids are formed when serine palmitoyltransferase condenses palmitoyl-CoA with alanine instead of serine during sphingolipid synthesis.1,2
