β-Asarone은 Acorus tatarinowii Schott 뿌리의 주요 성분 중 하나로 중추신경계(CNS)에 상당한 약리작용을 한다. β-Asarone은 혈액-뇌 장벽(BBB)을 통과할 수 있다[4]. β-Asarone은 단아산산화효소A(MAO-A, IC50 = 142 ± 18 µM)와 단아산산화효소B(MAO-B, IC50 = 362 ± 43 µM)를 억제한다.

β-Asarone (30 µg/mL)은 단백질 킨아스 A(PKA) 경로를 활성화하여 cAMP 반응 요소 결합 단백(CREB)의 인산화를 촉진함으로써 신경 성장 인자 (NGF)가 PC12 세포의 신경 세포 분화를 유도하는 것을 강화한다[6]. β-Asarone은 LPS가 활성화한 BV-2 미세 글리아 세포와 우울증에서 신경 보호 활동을 보인다[2,7-8].

β-Asarone (20, 30 mg/kg/d)은 쥐의 뇌 혈액 공급 중단 및 재공급 후 신경학적 결과를 개선했으며, 특히 신경 행동 기능 측면에서 그렇다[9]. β-Asarone은 베타 아밀로이드 해마 주사 쥐에서의 뉴런 세포사를 억제함으로써 인지 기능을 개선한다[10].
