Pyrroloquinoline quinone fue reportada como una nueva coenzima de la lactato deshidrogenasa (LDH) en mamíferos [1]. Pyrroloquinoline quinone tiene diversos efectos, incluyendo un efecto antioxidante, un efecto promotor del crecimiento celular y un efecto estimulador de la mitocondriogénesis [2,3,4,5,6,7].

Pyrroloquinoline quinone protegió contra el daño oxidativo causado por H2O2, debido a que tiene muchos sitios reductores. Se sugirió que las células HepG2 requieren más pyrroloquinoline quinone debido al mayor daño causado por el peróxido de hidrógeno en comparación con las células SK-N-SH [8]. Pyrroloquinoline quinone mostró un efecto protector sobre 6-OHDA utilizando células de neuroblastoma humano SH-SY5Y a 15 µM [9].

Pyrroloquinoline quinone puede servir como un factor de crecimiento en ratones BALB/c [10]. Los valores más bajos de RQ en ratones deficientes en PQQ en comparación con los ratones suplementados con PQQ, son un signo de función mitocondrial comprometida y una utilización ineficiente de carbohidratos [11].
